The Journal of Development Economics (JDE) publishes original research papers related to all aspects of economic development, from direct policy concerns to structural issues of underdevelopment. The focus is on quantitative or analytical work that is novel and relevant. This magazine does not publish book reviews. We welcome papers that explore development economics issues of interest to ordinary readers of this journal, and then use data from specific countries or regions to answer these questions. However, we do not publish articles that primarily focus on in-depth research of a specific country, region, case, or event, as these research findings may not be of great interest to the general readership of this journal. During our review process, we conduct a preliminary review of all papers, and some of them may be immediately rejected. This includes papers that are deemed inappropriate in terms of topic or methodology, although development is a broad field and sometimes it is a matter of subjective judgment. This also includes papers that do not meet our high standards in terms of contribution or added value to the literature, or in terms of methodological rigor.
